My friend Paige has a very creative post on her blog celebrating her 33rd week of pregnancy with 33 things she didn't know about pregnancy. Maybe it's because I'm 5 weeks ahead, but I'm too tired to think of 35 things I didn't expect about pregnancy. I can think of ten, however. I didn't know that...
10. I would start talking to my belly like every other crazy pregnant woman.
9. I wouldn't really mind when people touch my belly. After all, it doesn't really feel like me anyway.
8. Rather than crave chocolate (my lifetime favorite food), my comfort foods would be fried eggs & hashbrowns, potato chips, and Now & Laters. Not to mention that I used soy sauce for the first time in my life..and liked it!
7. Picking a name would be so hard (amen, Paige! I thought it was just boys' names that were the problem...)
6. I would worry so much.
5. I would still get mood swings, cravings, and breakouts at "that time" each month. No fair!
4. Swollen feet would bother me so much.
3. It would be so much fun to play with the baby, even before birth. Josh discovered this months ago, and I just got on board. If I poke wherever a little foot or elbow is, he's pretty quick to readjust. The bigger he gets, the harder it is for him to get away. We're pretty sure he'll be born already annoyed that we wouldn't let him grow in peace.
2. The last 2 weeks last at least 2 months.
1. I would be so excited to be not pregnant and even more excited to play with the baby outside of the belly.

Mommy's plastic surgery: a book for kids
Children are observant, and books can often help parents explain things that would normally be hard to discuss with a child. At least, that is the premise behind My Beautiful Mommy.
Thoughts? It could go either way. The article didn't make me think too highly of the book, but I guess I would have to read the book to pass judgement, but it did make me wonder if some things are better left unwritten...

More strange comments
We went to the hospital the other day for a class. A nurse asked me when I was due. When I said "a month from tomorrow" she laughed all the way down the hall. I wonder what that means?
Then, we were in the grocery store yesterday and I was carrying a gallon of milk. A woman came up to me and said (in a very sappy voice, I might add) "oh, that is so beautiful." I doubt she was talking about the gallon of milk, but maybe.

Meh
I'm hot, cranky, and tired. Please don't take it personally if I don't return your phone calls or seem crabby in general (because I am). Because I was training at the beginning of the month and rarely blog at home, I missed my book reviews. Warning: they're boring.
The Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy. I personally found this book hillarious enough to buy. It's written like your girlfriend sitting you down and telling you the icky details of pregnancy and birth that people either forget or just don't mention. Not the most scientific book, but entertaining and pretty informative (for what it's worth). I would even recommend this one to a non-pregnant person who is curious or really bored.

Get a Financial Life: Personal Finance in Your Twenties and Thirties. This was a textbook I never read when I was taking the finance class. It's not bad. If you're not in your twenties/thirties, it's probably still worthwhile, but the focus is getting your finances in order while you have little money but lots of time before retirement.

Kimberly Mays, the stomach spinner
Three creepy men came in to work yesterday. Creepy as in everything about them. During the course of the 45-second transaction, one of the men and I have this conversation:
Man: You're pregnant.
Me: Yes.
Man: How's that going for you?
Me: Fine.
Man: You can't roll over anymore, huh?
Me: Nope.
Man: But can you spin on your stomach?
What?

"Back on my Feet"
Thanks to Em for pointing out this article: Back on my Feet. I love to run. Not as much as some, of course, but I have always found ways that running improves my life. I think most physical activity has the same magic, but it's been running for me. If this comes to Phoenix, I'd totally join.
P.S. Where are the pictures? Our camera is at my sister's, so they'll have to wait.

Say What?
You know those awkward situations that just get worse? Or the people that don't seem to have a sensor when things are getting weird? Well, I experienced both this morning.
In a desperate run to the grocery store at 6:00 am (we really were out of everything!) I loaded my cart and opted for self-checkout against my better judgement. I find the self-checkout stands are not as convenient as they seem and with more than a few items, it can be quite tricky not to mess up the sensor. However, there was only one lane open with 3 people in line. Anyway, there I am, the only person on that half of the store, checking out with only one eye open (a bit of an exaggeration, but I was quite sleepy still) when I hear:
Lady: When are you due?
Me: ...
Lady: When are you due?
Me: Oh! Me! I'm due the middle of May.
Lady: No! Really? You look like you're ready today.
Me: I wish. Nope, another 6 weeks to go.
Lady: Are you having twins?
Me: No. Just one.
Lady: Are you sure?
Me: (really getting tired of that question. I mean, I haven't seen the kid yet, but the doctor's pretty sure there's just one) Yep. Just one.
The woman then yells across the silent Fry's "Hey Merleen! She's not due until May! And she's only having one!" Nice.
Lady: Boy or girl? Do you know what you're having?
Me: Yeah, it's a boy.
Lady: I bet he'll be a football player.
Me: Maybe. (yeah right, no men in my family are over 6 ft and Josh is 5'11)
Again, with the screaming, "Merleen! It's a boy!"
Lady: Do you have a name for him yet?
Me: Nope, not yet.
Lady: Your husband doesn't want a junior?
Me: (considering pretending I'm offended that she assumed I was married. I'm not wearing a ring, after all) No, he doesn't.
Lady: Your husband must not like his name.
Me: ...
Anyway, it was exciting. Silly people. What else can you say? I know I'm big, but I'm not the biggest woman I've ever seen. I'm not even waddling yet!
