Nashville

We took a last-minute trip to Nashville this weekend to visit Anna-Lisa and Juan Carlos. We had such a great time. We did a little sight seeing and a little hanging out and a lot of eating. The BBQ place they took us (which was great, of course) had 7 different BBQ sauces. I stuck mainly to the regular old stuff, but it was fun to try the other ones. Here are a few pictures from the trip:

Me & Anna-Lisa:Juan Carlos, Josh, Jonah & Huaso (hmm..his name should be Juaso?):Jonah's feelings about the trip:

And finally, just a snapshot from today. I came in to the living room and found Jonah parking his cars in a line.
Josh said once when we were talking about birth order that Jonah didn't act like a firstborn because he was "cool like a lastborn". I offer this picture as evidence of my case.

a new last name, perhaps?

Jonah blessed dinner for us tonight but did not want us to help. He said the following:

"Thank you for the food.
Thank you for breakfast.
Thank you for ears.
Thank you for eyes.
Thank you for Jonah's eyes.
Thank you for Jonah's eyes.
Thank you for Jonah's eyes.
Thank you for Jonah's eyes."

At this point, we interrupted him. Apparently he's pretty grateful for his eyes.

In other news, he calls me Kimmery sometimes and is calling himself by his full name. That is, when he's not "Jonah highchair."

a shopping trip

Things I can't find yet: Malt-o-Meal, chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, flour tortillas with the correct ingredients, romaine lettuce (other than the pre-packaged stuff).

Things that are so over priced I can barely buy them: El Pato, enchilada sauce, milk, Oreos, cheese, chicken, beef.

Things that are cheaper: eggs.

--------------

In happier news, I got a library card (yay!) and drove past a Latin tienda so I'll check them out for a possible tortilla and enchilada sauce locale.

Jonah learns to say, "cheese"

In an effort to appease the family we miss so much, here is a quick picture update for the day. Jonah is finally enjoying having his picture taken and will smile on cue. Well, it's a sort of smile anyway. All three of these pictures are in Arizona (as if the middle one wasn't a dead giveaway) but I hadn't uploaded them until now so they're practically new. Now we'll work on a slightly less pained smile.

the house

The short version of the house hunt is this: it took us two days and when we moved in we wanted to cry because the first night we killed 4 or 5 cockroaches, the shower didn't work, we had no hot water, and the badly stained toilet wasn't bolted to the ground so I toppled off when I tried to use it. It's been 8 days since we moved in, a few maintenance calls and at least 4 trips to Home Depot for the things they won't do or we don't want to wait for them to fix and I'm finally ready to take pictures. So here goes an almost complete tour of the house.

From the front:The living room (yes the fireplace is workable but who knows how well):The dining room:The kitchen:Jonah's room, looking in:Jonah's room, looking out:
The bathroom (all that caulking? Josh did it himself):
The back (the fenced in area is not the neighbor's yard; it's actually our dog run. I might make it my garden). The house to the right is what Jonah calls, "Quintin's house":The front yard (I'm standing at the corner of the yard to take the picture; Jonah loves all the space!):No pictures of the spare room or our room yet because that's where I stashed all the boxes and laundry so I could take these pictures. Thanks again to everyone that helped us pack, unpack, load, clean, debug, pay for the move, or generally helped us stay sane through the whole process. It doesn't feel like home yet, but we're getting closer!

Oh, and we can't quite decide: do you like the captions better above or below pictures? Does the answer change if you're using Google reader?

checking in

I know, I know, house pictures. They're coming. We should have taken some before we moved anything in because now I want it to be a little less messy before I take pictures and that's a lot of work!

My parents left today and we miss them so much.

Most of the girls on campus wear short athletic shorts and over-sized t-shirts. I don't get it. The advantage is that when Josh gets home my t-shirt and jeans will seem fancy.

Tomorrow includes a trip to the laundromat (I've been saying that for 3 days now, so we'll see), getting a library card, and going to campus to remove a rat from a snake cage.

The current highlights of Tuscaloosa include the BBQ place right across the street (my favorite restaurant we've been to so far) and seeing fireflies for the first time. They are even more awesome than I'd imagined! It was also a first for Jonah and my dad and it had been many years for my mom so that was a huge success. Next time, we'll take a jar and catch some. (Did you know they are beetles? Not that cute up close.)

oh, Robert!

I'm sitting on the bed in our hotel waiting for Robert from the shipping company we used to call me. Apparently, the night manager is the best bet for someone to have sympathy and deliver our goods tomorrow instead of making me wait until Monday night. The only issue is that this man supposedly arrives at work at 11 pm. I called him at midnight (I had a nap from like 10-12..I couldn't stay up any longer!) and he wasn't there yet. So now the dilemma: do I call again and risk offending the secretary by implying that she had not delivered my message or do I continue to wait? At least Good Eats is still on for another 2 minutes.

sticker gunk

I taped some murals Jonah drew to our sliding glass door instead of the wall and thought I was so clever. It would have been just fine if I had taken them down before I packed up my razor blades or thew away my nail polish remover. I could go get some Desolv-it, but I'm not going to do that for one little window! We're saving money and cutting down not buying more! So I found a few home remedies online. Rubbing alcohol didn't work. Peanut butter did. That's right, peanut butter! I was skeptical but was about to toss the almost empty peanut butter and thought, "why not?" I smeared peanut butter all over the goo spots and when I was done with lunch, it wiped right off (gunk and all). I'm fascinated and a little weirded out both.

Other than that, I'm disconnecting the router now so don't expect any emails until we get to Alabama!

what seemed really annoying when I started writing this and now seems neurotic

I've had a pretty rough morning and all day was focused on just getting to nap time during which I would either make a list of available houses for rent so we could start calling agents or take a nap myself. Instead, I got sucked in to looking up the really vital things about Tuscaloosa like, where is the library and is there even an Old Navy there? (really close to UA and yes) In the process, I'm getting annoyed. First, some back story:

When I was living in Utah, I got quite used to it being the only "U" state. It was a bit irritating to me when I moved home to actually have to look at the list when I scrolled down to make sure I chose Arizona instead of Arkansas, etc (little things like this really do get under my skin but I promise I'm relatively sane). I was getting moderately excited about the fact that Alabama is the very first state alphabetically so I could either hit "A" and move on or just one down arrow. How nice. Unfortunately, it seems that some places alphabetize by abbreviation (even when they list the state's full name) and others by the state so on some lists, Alaska (AK) comes first and on others Alabama (AL). Ugh.

Looking at it now, this is a really weird thing to get irritated about, but what can I say? I think Quintin at least might appreciate it since we have had conversations about the joys of being the only "U" state. Hmm. Maybe when Molly asked if the whole family was as weird as him he should have said, "YES!"
